AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the recent comments by the secretary general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) who has accused the Islamic Republic of undermining stability in the region and supporting terrorist organizations.
In a statement on Wednesday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Mousavi dismissed the meddlesome comments and allegations raised by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg against Tehran.
In an interview during the UN General Assembly in New York on September 24, Stoltenberg accused Iran of pursuing “destabilizing policies”, undermining regional stability, and supporting terrorist organizations, and called for action against Iran’s missile program.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran condemns such interfering remarks from the foreign powers and security institutions about the internal affairs of countries and the Persian Gulf region, and believes that any interference in the security arrangements of the region by the outsiders would create and escalate insecurity and tensions in the region,” Mousavi underlined.
He also emphasized that the NATO secretary general must be held accountable for the “destructive consequences” of NATO’s interference in the Middle East and West Asia instead of meddling in the internal affairs of the region.
The NATO’s interference in the region has only resulted in the “killing of civilians, strengthening of terrorism, a rise in the production of narcotics, destruction, and increased insecurity,” he added.
The consequences of NATO’s interference in the Middle East are now obvious in certain regional countries which are gripped by insecurity and instability, the Iranian spokesman deplored.
Iran believes that the Middle East security must be ensured by the regional countries alone and without the presence of foreign forces, Mousavi underscored, adding, “Like every independent state in the world, the Islamic Republic of Iran reserves the right to have conventional defense plans, and in this regard, the Islamic Republic of Iran’s missile program has a defensive and deterrent nature, and the expression of unnecessary concerns will have no impact on our country’s policy of preserving and strengthening the missile defense program.”
